Orientation Workshop – Patent Competition “Innovative Solutions for Everyday Life”

An orientation workshop was organized on 8th February 2011 at Intellectual Property Training Centre (IPTC), Menara UOA Bangsar with the presence of our honourable guest speakers from World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), Mr. Omar Katbi and Mr. Konrad Lutz Mailänder, inventors and students. The objective of this workshop is to provide further details regarding the Patent Competition that was launched on 15 November 2010 with the theme “Innovative Solutions For Everyday Life”. We have received an overwhelming response with the 200 registration forms been submitted before its closing date on 31 January 2011.
 
The workshop began with a short speech by Mr. Katbi, Head of Outreach Services Section of WIPO and later, the opening address by the Director General of MyIPO. In the first presentation, Mr. Katbi highlighted that Malaysia is known as one of the most active countries involved with innovation and invention. He also explained that the competition is a collaborative effort between WIPO, Korean Patent Office (KIPO) and MyIPO. 
 
The second part of the workshop was conducted by Mr. Konrad Lutz Mailänder, the Head of Patent Information Section of WIPO, with his presentation on “Inventions and Patents”, “Finding Patent Information” and “International Patent Classifications”. In his presentation, he gave further details about said topic to the participants. The final presentation given by Mr. Mailänder was on “Element of Patent Prosecution Drafting of An Application”. In this final session, he reminded the participants on the importance of having good knowledge basis on drafting claims before submitting in their projects for the competition to MyIPO.
