4 November 2019 –  Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs officiated the National Seminar on Branding and the Madrid System for the International Registration of Mark today in Georgetown, Penang.

The seminar gathered more than 150 local entrepreneurs, IP practitioners and representatives from various Government agencies to share the new scopes in Trademarks Bill 2019 which will replace the Trade Marks Act 1976. The participants were also exposed to the Madrid System, a global trademark registration system which enables trademark owners to obtain protection in several countries by means of a single international application.

Saifuddin Nasution in his speech said that Malaysian companies need to be more cognizant of this development and start having a long-term brand strategy to protect and leverage on their trademark. “Successful brands underpinned by trademark protection is key to a company’s sustained financial viability”, he added.

The seminar was organized by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) and the Malaysian Intellectual Property Association (MIPA).
