25 September 2019 – The Capacity Building Workshop on Geographical Indications (GI) was specially designed for GI producers and associations to learn the drafting of GI Book of Specification as well as to share few thoughts on the roles, functions and business model of GI associations in protecting and promoting GI, as well as the GI Protection and Promotion in the European Union.

The workshop was facilitated by Mr.Denis Sautier, Senior Agri-food Economist of CIRAD and Mr.Ryzul Osman Basah, Senior Assistant IP Officer to give hands-on approach, interactive and focus exposure to all the participants.

Dato’ Mohd Roslan, Director General of MyIPO who officiated the workshop said that GIs registration brought an increased demand and a higher retail price for the product, which in turn meant a better distribution of economic returns for producers. It has also increased the land value of the and has substantially helped the socio-economic development and sustainability of the region.

This workshop is one of the programs between the EU and ASEAN Member States under the ARISE Plus Intellectual Property Rights (ARISE+ IPR) programme.
