31st July 2019 – EUMCCI “In Conversation With” series – Safeguarding Creativity: Empowering Science & Innovation in Malaysia was organized by EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce & Industry in collaboration with the Italian Malaysian Business Association (IMBA) With keynote address by YBhg Dato’ Mohd Roslan bin Mahayudin, Director General of Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).

In his address, Dato’ Mohd Roslan underlined six initiatives in safeguarding the innovation chain in Malaysia through new developments in IPR protection. “Malaysia is a signatory of the Berne Convention which entails international copyright protection and the Paris Convention which covers patents, trademarks, industrial designs, utility models, service marks, trade names, and geographical indications. We are also a signatory of the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which allows countries to take up legal measures within their own capacity in enforcing Intellectual Property Protection.”

The Director General added that “In 2018, the Intellectual Property Rights Index that measures the strength of physical property rights, intellectual property rights, and the legal and political environments that contain them, ranked Malaysia 34th out of 125 economies. While we were ranked 7th out of 19 economies in the region, we top the list amongst the developing countries in the region”.

The EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EUMCCI) represents the voice of the EU business community in Malaysia. EUMCCI is also the lead applicant of an EU co-funded project ‘Support for European Business in South East Asia Markets-Malaysia’ (SEBSEAM-M).
