NATIONAL SEMINAR ON IP AND GASTRONOMIC TOURISM IN MALAYSIA
23 June 2022 – MyIPO hosted the National Seminar on IP and Gastronomic Tourism in Malaysia which was organized by World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).
This seminar which was a part of WIPO’s project titled “Promoting the Development of Gastronomic Tourism through Intellectual Property (IP)” aims at boosting economic growth by enhancing the added value of the gastronomic tourism sector. Its overall purpose is to promote intellectual property related to culinary traditions for use in the gastronomic tourism sector.
Gastronomic tourism products are now seen as valuable means of attracting tourists from all over the world to visit Malaysia. Culinary products and services can be protected under trademarks, certification marks, collective marks, geographical indications, copyright, trade secrets and other IP components, said Director General of MyIPO, Mr Abdul Haris bin Haji Lakar. NATIONAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DAY 2022
26 April 2022 – This year, the National Intellectual Property Day 2022’s theme is “Innovative Youths, the Malaysian Family Aspirations”.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, National Intellectual Property Day 2022 is an opportunity for youths to learn how intellectual property can support their goals, help turn their ideas into reality, generate income, create jobs and positively impact the world around them.

MALAYSIA’S ACCESSION TO THE BUDAPEST TREATY AND MARRAKESH TREATY
31 March 2022 – Malaysia has officially acceded to the Budapest Treaty and Marrakesh Treaty administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and subsequently became a member and complied with the provisions of both agreements.
In line with that, Malaysia today deposited the instrument of ratification of the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure (Budapest Treaty) and also the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access To Published Works For Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired Or Otherwise Print Disabled (Marrakesh Treaty) at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva. The instrument of ratification was signed by the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi and handed over by Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Datuk Dr. Ahmad Faisal Muhamad to the Director General of WIPO, Darren Tang. MUSIC RIGHTS (SARAWAK) BERHAD AUTHORIZED AS COPYRIGHT LICENSING BODY
26 February 2022 – Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP), YB Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi today handed over the certificate declaring Music Rights (Sarawak) Berhad (MRSB) as a licensing body recognized by the government to conduct royalty collection activities on behalf of singers, musicians in song recordings, music video makers and local recording companies involving local ethnicities in Sarawak.
MRSB is one of the latest licensing bodies declared by the Copyright Controller under the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) to collect music royalties and represent the exclusive members of the owners and creators of music works, sound recordings and performances by native artistes and musicians in Sarawak. LAUNCHING CEREMONY OF IP FILING FUND 2.0
25 January 2022 – Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) YB Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, today launched the Intellectual Property Filing Fund 2.0 amounting to RM4 million under Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) for a period of four years, starting this year until 2025.
This fund, which is an allocation under the 12th Malaysia Plan, is expected to benefit 2,000 entrepreneurs, especially from the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector. It covers filing fees for all intellectual property components namely trademarks, patents, copyrights, industrial designs and geographical indications. It also include costs for work that requires professional and technical services such as patent drafting. (more)
DEWAN NEGARA PASSED THREE BILLS; PATENT (AMENDMENT) BILL 2021, THE COPYRIGHT (AMENDMENT) BILL 2021 AND THE GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS BILL 2021
22 December 2021 – Dewan Negara today passed three more bills, namely the Patent (Amendment) Bill 2021, the Copyright (Amendment) Bill 2021 and the Geographical Indications Bill 2021.
The bills were approved after the third reading by Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Rosol Wahid. (more)
NANOMALAYSIA BERHAD SIGNS MOU WIT MyIPO FOR THE TISC PROGRAMME
12 November 2021 – NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) for the Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) programme.
The programme provides a platform for IP training programmes, such as patent searching, patent drafting, IP commercialisation and IP marketing, conducted and coordinated by MyIPO, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
These training sessions will be conducted by experts in the field of IP from the United States and Europe, appointed by WIPO, using modules in accordance with the standards set by the WIPO, and to share “best practices” adopted abroad. (more)
PATENT DRAFTING WORKSHOP WITH UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA PAHANG (UMP)
13 October 2021 – Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) organized a virtual Patent Drafting Workshop with the Department of Research and Innovation of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP).
The objectives of this workshop are to increase the understanding on intellectual property as well as to develop patent drafting skills and filing of IP among UMP researchers and lecturers. Participants were divided into three breakout rooms run by facilitators from MyIPO.
A total of 20 UMP’s researchers and lecturers have participated in this three-day workshop.
PATENT DRAFTING WORKSHOP WITH UNIVERSITI UTARA MALAYSIA (UUM)
12 October 2021 – Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) organized a virtual Patent Drafting Workshop with the Innovation and Commercialization Center (ICC) of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
The two -day workshop aims to provide understanding to the university officials on the patent drafting, hence encouraging patent filing among university researchers and lecturers. (more)
